When a child earns income from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or brand deals, parents face a complex set of legal obligations they weren't prepared for: Coogan law trust accounts, state-specific compliance requirements, tax documentation, parental consent flows, and brand deal management.
Eight US states — California, Illinois, Tennessee, New York, Utah, Minnesota, Arkansas, and New Mexico — currently have Coogan-style laws requiring that a portion of minor creator earnings be set aside in a blocked trust account. More states are enacting similar legislation every year.
